In this design the huge blades are connected to a spindle in the center. The bearings that support the spindle and control the pitch of the blades (which can be hundreds of feet long) see huge pitch-moment loading, some of which is manifest as torque energy that is focused through the center spindle. The target speed for the spindle is 18 or 20 rpm and the bearings holding the spindle are mounted in a huge casting which also contains a large gearbox stepping the speed up to 1800 to 2000 RPMs which allows for the proper surface speed relationship between the coils and magnets. It is necessary to invert or condition the current, which is expensive. This gearbox is full of many large bearings, gears and castings; for a 2 MW turbine the gearbox can easily weigh 30 tons. This gearbox needs to be mounted on the top of a pole more than 150 feet in the air and be able to support the turbine blades under full-force wind conditions. ***MAGLEV Power Generation, the pitch moment ratio is closer to 1-to-1 then the 100-to-1 as with a horizontal spindle design.

QUESTION: Can you give the approximate dimensions of the structure? Just a guess, but by using the train and transmission towers as a reference, my guess is 700 to 1,000 feet.

since the whole assembly is magnetically lifted I wonder how u keep it from just blowing away off of the platform since there is nothing holding it down ??..highly unstable…u would need structure to keep it in place even if it had a central axis

@Phacias It’s not the same thing at all. Friction is a much bigger loss of energy. And drag isn’t because of magnetic fields.

@misterbonzai08 We have several large wind turbines in North Cornwall. Curiously they always seem to turn at the same speed! Self synchronous is the reason. Incidentally the Delabole wind farm produced as much energy as 50,000 tons of coal in its first ten years. OK one oil tanker could carry a lot more energy in one trip but why waste perfectly good wind?

@wolfsledgend Yeah as long as your 1 inch diameter of your magnet x the 300 foot tower weighs less than 100kg’s…Most of the earth magnets I am use too can loose their magnetism from environmental factors as well…i.e… lighting and movement(shock)…
@fronteraroja001 maglev is fine but you have to take into account inertia. something that big is going to take a lot of force to move from a stand-still position regardless if it’s on a frictionless bearing. also you have to take into account the generator it’s running which also has a lot of inertia as well as magnetic resistance and friction as you try to spin it up. plus the amount of friction on current wind turbines isn’t really a huge stumbling block, they’re pretty efficient already
@Everfalling they use the maglev technology, so it’s frictionless, that means they are way more efficient than the traditional wind turbines, and need way less wind to start moving to start producing energy.
i don’t see how making one huge turbine in one place is more efficient than many turbines spread over a wider area. In the video on the front page of the website you even include sails to capture a wider area of wind into the turbine. what if the wind blows beyond your 100 acre plot? you have a dead turbine. also the benefit of smaller turbines is that it doesn’t take much to get them going whereas this beast looks like it’d take a gale if not at least very strong winds all the time.
@dedshaw1612wifi have you ever tried to make two of those magnets about an inch in diameter touch eachother? near imposible you can ad about 100kg and those litle mignets still wont touch so this could be done easy
