Jacobs 110 volt DC Wind Generator

default Jacobs 110 volt DC Wind Generator

Here is a vintage Jacobs from about 1948. Its a long case 110 DC with dual commutator, which means it has 4 sets of brushes at each end. It is very well designed and well built. It weighs 440 lbs, has just over 7 foot blades and is rated at 2500 watts. It is self goverend by what is called a flyball governer. The black wieghts are moved outwards by centrifugal force, which in turn twist the blades via gears to slow the generator down. The tail can manually be cranked in and out of the wind to stop the unit. These were known as the Cadillacs of wind generators in thier day. It is used daily in our off gridpower setup, it is currently sitting on top of a short 22 foot section of tower but soon will go atop its original Jacobs tower to 60 feet.

Thanks for showing the video, especially manually furling the tail to show how the blades almost stop!

    Great to see it running.

I apologize for the cheap video camera the video appears to show the blades as being curved but they are not.The amp gauge shows 42 amps at 60 volts. I have the generator wired to charge a 48 volt battery bank.
